Mens 5ths vs Weston 3rds 13/10/07
Written by Neil McQuillan

Railway Union 5ths vs Weston 3rds away.

0-2 loss.

Another week another team. Showing a large number of changes from the previous week the 5ths took on Weston on their new astro in Esker.

Unfortunately the new pitch didn't bring good luck and we went down 2-0 despite having a strong squad. At the back Eddie English flew back from Argentina to sweep moving Uli Brell to right back and John Curley came in at left back. With both teams playing 4-4-2 the midfield was a crowded affair but we managed to play some nice hockey to get in and around their 25. However so did they and Weston probably had the better of play and of chances in the first half. Karl Halpin, Maurice Prendeville, Kai Mahadevaiah and Peter McCarthy were all working hard across the middle while Michael Ing and Fergus Flynn foraged up front.

Hubba came on midway through the first half to continue his fine run of form in centre midfield and one of his defence splitting passes set up Peter McCarthy with a shot that had the Weston keeper scrambling across his line to clear. Terry Gale also came on to give the front line a change of pace with some fine direct running but Railway couldn't find the touch needed to break clear.

It was Weston who got the break through though with a break down our left before putting the ball past Jack Hegarty. More pressure from Weston had us on the back foot and while Weston thought they had a second goal Railway's defence had stopped thinking the ball had crossed the end line before it was crossed in. Railway managed to clear from the resultant bully.

Despite more pressure from Railway the equalizer never came and the last touch of the game gave Weston their second goal.

It was a good battling performance from the 5ths. With a little more luck and a little more organisation and smarts on the pitch it was a match that could have yielded a result. However without those Weston deserved their win.

Thanks to Mark English for umpiring at short notice.
