Season Review 2nds - 04 / 05

Overview of the Season

A good late season league run pushed the seconds to 5th position in Div 3 but poor early season did not help their final league position. Losing captain Graham O'Meara early on to a skiing accident did not help the squad but new recruits Pete Matthews, Simon Booth and John Peare aided by younger players coming through in Daire Coady, Scott McNeill and Liam Reidy with the ever improving Richie Tunney gave the squad much more strength in depth than in previous years.

Yet again they showed their Irish Cup pedigree with a strong run to the semi finals defeating Monkstown (3-2), Aer Lingus (6-0), Corinthians (0-0 on 4-3 on pen strokes) and Lisnagarvey (3-1) Irish Junior Semi Final.  But Cork Harlequins proved too big a hurdle and despite going three nil down early into the second half the seconds rallied back and a short corner variation was delfected home by Pete Matthews and depsite concerted pressure the quins defence and their keeper held firm to put Railway out by 3 goals to 1.

It was more heart ache in the Railway Cup final to YMCA in the Sandymount derby as YM scored with the last touch of the game which saw a great deflection giving Ken Miller no chance in the Railway goal. It was an even game which neither side deserved to lose (nor win !) with few chances and not one to bring the crowds back !
