1st XI open season with win!
Written by Conor O'Brien
The first XI got off to a winning start to the new season with a 2-1 victory against YMCA in Claremont Road. It was just the start that was needed as we build upon the second half performance of last season, and look to get some early points on the board. We put in a good solid performance in the first half with Owen Butler creating chances from midfield. The solitary goal of the half fell to Karl Kinch from a breakdown from a penalty corner. One aspect of the half that was particularly pleasing was the defensive play. YMCA did not get any short corners or shots of any short due to some fine tackling and the workrate of the front six limiting possession. Also, due to this fact, YMCA were compelled to moving one of their better forward players, Andrew Walker, back into midfield as they were being dominated in this area.

After the break, we did not play as well, and for a time, we found it difficult to get the ball out of our own half. We sat back a bit too far, and YM put a better squeeze on us. However, we continued to defend well, and when Glen was called upon to make saves, he did so, and were able to clear the danger. We still caused some problems for YM’s defense on the break. We took a 2-0 lead from another rebound on a corner – this time Ted Lynch scoring in at the far post.

YM closed the gap with 7 minutes to go, and put us under some pressure towards the end, but without really creating many chances. In the end, it was the result that mattered. We were happy with the defending around the circle, and the fact that we only gave them two corners in the match – and these came from our own mistakes rather than their play.

This sets us up nicely for the next game – Pembroke home in another local derby on Saturday week, 1st October. We have a free week next week as we are due to play Trinity. I hope we get a good turnout for the Pembroke game!
