Season Review 2004-05
Written by Ladies Admin

This season was full of ups and downs for the thirds. With much to prove after having been relegated last season, promotion was the only way to a successful season. With only two matches left to play there were four teams in contention for 2nd place! We performed when it was needed and with Lady Luck on our side we clinched that place to get back up to Division 6.

September 2004 saw the start of a new season with lots of opportunity in Railway Union. With our fantastic new hockey pitch now up and running, we were all keen to get off to a good start. The thirds had much to prove this season in Division 7, having been relegated last season. The plan was to get back up into Division 6.

We got off to a good start, beating Botanic 5-3 on their all weather pitch.

We won 11 games, drew 2 and lost 5. We scored 48 goals and let in 19 and had 8 clean sheets. In total, 31 people played with us throughout the season. Our top goal scorer was Tanya MacArthur.

Our cup campaign was not so successful. We beat Hermes in the first round after extra time. We had a very tough draw for our second round game, away to Tullamore who beat us.

With the cup out of the picture, we focused on the league. However, we had many ups and downs. The odd thing about this league was that lots of other teams had as many ups and downs as we did. On many occasions Mini and I thought that the chances of promotion were gone, only do discover that someone else had got a very unlikely result. With only two games left to be played, there were four teams fighting for second place: Tullamore, Pembroke, North Kildare and us and there was only 2 or 3 points in it!! Finally, after a very tough game against Suttonians, we won by 1 goal to nil and secured second place and with it, promotion back into Division 6

We would like to thank everyone who helped us out this season: Mini for coaching us, and Ger for helping out with the coaching, Jane Coyne who came to Tullamore, Emma Delany who came to north Kildare and Louise McDermott who came to Naas to umpire some of our games and of course the fantastic Fiachra who umpired almost all of our other games. Ali for arranging our fixtures, Linda Goggin for doing all our registrations, Jonty, who came to our last game against Suttonians to ensure that we won our last game and got promoted. And finally Leah who played two matches for much of the season and made sure that the thirds and fourths had a goalkeeper. Without Leah's commitment, I am sure that we would have let in many, many more goals and am sure would not have been promoted.
