The Railway 6s season started strong with 7/8 league wins and 18 goals by Christmas. Beating Swords in the first round of the Cup, we faced Pembroke in the 2rnd round. The game was matched throughout, and a superb performance from the Railway defence kept us in the game, the only goals coming from well-taken short corners, but after an exciting extra-time showdown we were knocked out 2-1.
The seasons first team night out proved equally as exciting, the whole team dancing our socks off in Crystal and top goal-scorer Dee having a showdown of her own in the mens toilets! That’ll be the sambucca!
Our first match of the New Year was the Railway derby, and a rather sluggish 6s drew 0-0 with the 7s. Frustrated with having dropped points, and determined to make amends, we stormed through our next 4 games, securing 12/12 points and scoring an impressive 14 goals.
Not without our problems however, a training session clash ruled Annemarie out of 2 games, and Maria ankle bore a frightening resemblance to Wayne Rooney pre-World Cup worries!
Team spirit and a huge effort from Susan ensured our first fundraiser was a success, a Virgin Vie makeup extravaganza and raffle which raised an impressive e465. Our second fundraiser is sure to raise more money again, serving luxury sausage butties to the hungry Vets after their Annual Tournament.
Focused on promotion, league leaders YMCA would prove to be our biggest challenge and raising our game, we clashed head on and were winning 1-0 at half time. Luck was not on our side however, and YMCA clawed back 2 goals to win the game. With 3 games to go, and every point absolutely essential, we fell at the first hurdle with a dire performance against Diosecan. Undeterred by one bad match, with determination practically oozing through our pores, our next match against TRL was a bit more like it!! 5-0 victory bringing us up to 38/48 points, 37 goals. Our last match against Bray though proved it wasn't to be our season for promotion but roll on next year!
A huge team effort has been made this season by everyone on the squad but special thanks has to be made to Chis for his enormous contribution and commitment. Huge thanks also to Ros and Jonty for encouraging and supporting the team, and to Hilary and Zoe for being our extra legs in our toughest games!
