2006/2007 was a bit of a roller-coaster season for the 7ths in a number of ways! With high squad numbers but lack of practice as a team, we got off to a poor start to the season with just two wins from our first 7 league games. Taking turns in goal wasn’t proving very successful and we suffered a speedy cup exit at the hands of a much superior Dalkey team.
2007 could only get better and luckily it did – starting with a nil-all draw against the mighty 6ths… We only hoped that this wasn’t going to prove to be the result that prevented them from getting the much-deserved promotion (and putting an end to the most nerve-wracking fixture of the season – 6ths v 7ths!)
We seemed to have turned a corner at this stage with the squad bursting at the seams, a number of draws and playing well as a team. However, two more losses followed and we came to face bottom of the table Phoenix Park, with a much-depleted squad, knowing that we really had to win to get some pride back. And win we did! Now with 3 wins and a draw from our last 4 matches we’re finishing the season on a high!
Many thanks to Ciara for the Monday night training and the match day mascot! Thanks also to Jonty and Ros for the extra coaching and encouragement – it really helped us get off to a better start in the New Year. Special thanks to Lofty who took on the job of match-day captain with her great tactics and team talks (and threats!) Thanks to Kate for being a fantastic goalie and actually only liking that position! And of course, thanks to all the players for making it a really great season.
