Having been promoted from Division 4 last season the 2nd team played well in the higher Division, holding a top four position at the mid season point. The team was strengthened by the return of ex-senior goal keeper Emma Curran and an influx of some young talented players like Jennie White and Niamh O'Brien. After the Christmas break the team pushed for a top two spot, to gain promotion, but it wasn't to be this season, with strong finishes by Bray and Corinthians, and subsequently Suttonians and Pembroke. Railway had a very good Leinster Cup run, beating Our Lady's (2-1) Glenanne (3-1), and Genesis (1-0), before being beaten by Corinthians in the final 3-0. Captain, Emma Delaney led by example, with a total commitment to the team both on and off the pitch. Player of the Year, Karen Morrisey, was one of the team's starlet's, her ability to sweep the ball flat and hard on the new water-based surface being complemented by a tireless work-rate. The top goal scorer was Jennie White, our short-corner striker, who has a low hard strike feared by the opposition defences. However, the goal scoring was not all left to Jennie with no fewer than 12 2nd team players getting on the score sheet. Close behind Jennie was Julie Bernard on 5 (who missed much of the season through injury), with Helen Johnston and Sinead Walsh both on 4. Many of the 2nds team also subbed up to our very succesful 1st team this season, which made for a very busy season. Karen Morrisey and Emma Curran played on the Leinster Junior Team with Caitriona Walsh, Katie O'Toole and Ruth Hutchinson playing on the Connacht Junior Team. Next season we intend to build on this year's success and push for that promotion spot to Division 2. |
