For the second year in a row Railway benefited from an influx of new players. At the beginning of the season there were 22 players competing for 1st XI places, 5 new members entered the squad again this year. Cathy Kenefick arrived from cork having played previously for UCC, Jean McDonnell from UCD, Sarah McMaster from Corinthians, Michelle Van Duin relocated from Holland to Dublin and Grace O’Flanagan joined the senior ranks after turning 16. Resulting massive competition for places throughout the season enabling Railway to operate a competitive squad system. After a successful Preseason “Bootcamp” to Reading we embarked on our league campaign opening with and away match to Old Alex. Disappointed with a draw it was obvious the potential that this team had. In the run up to Christmas we played 9 league matches won 5, Drew 3 and Lost 1. Having dropped 6 points from 3 frustrating draws we lay in 4th place in the league at the Christmas break. Not wanting to be a one hit wonder in the AIL’s Railway were determined to gain a TOP 3 finish in the League and progress in the Cups. After the long Christmas break we hosted Armagh Hockey Club in our first ISC match of the season. A highly competent performance saw railway beat a young capable Armagh side 6-2. Unfortunately an away trip to Ballymoney in the Quarter Final saw our exit in the cup, nevertheless a good warm up for the AIL match against them on the 20th of May. Railway reached the Leinster cup Final for only the 2nd time in the clubs history. A below par performance saw us loose 2-1 to an extremely motivated UCD side. The support received from the club was phenomenal, each and every player appreciated the efforts people went to, hopefully 2007 can see us lift the Cup!In second half of the league campaign we Played 9, Won 6, Drew 2, and Lost 1. In early March we were still in contention to win the league. Our final league placing was 3rd which has gained us qualification to our second successive All Ireland Finals appearance. Only loosing 2 games in the league all season an impressive statistic! During the season Railway formed an indoor team and we were invited to Birmgham to play in the Midlands Invitational Tournament. Having never played indoor before it was a good opportunity to learn on the job so to speak. Railway were unlucky with some close results that went against us. The opposition were some of the best in the UK and we convincingly defeated the reigning Welsh Champions who will be playing in Europe next year. Our sincere thanks to Jonty who coached us and even managed to play with the worst port hangover ever! For the second year in a row Railway benefited from an influx of new players.
