For the second year in a row Railway benefited from an influx of new players. At the beginning of the season there were 22 players competing for 1st XI places, 5 new members entered the squad again this year. Cathy Kenefick arrived from cork having played previously for UCC, Jean McDonnell from UCD, Sarah McMaster from Corinthians, Michelle Van Duin relocated from Holland to Dublin and Grace O’Flanagan joined the senior ranks after turning 16. Resulting massive competition for places throughout the season enabling Railway to operate a competitive squad system. After a successful Preseason “Bootcamp” to Reading we embarked on our league campaign opening with and away match to Old Alex. Disappointed with a draw it was obvious the potential that this team had. In the run up to Christmas we played 9 league matches won 5, Drew 3 and Lost 1. Having dropped 6 points from 3 frustrating draws we lay in 4th place in the league at the Christmas break. Not wanting to be a one hit wonder in the AIL’s Railway were determined to gain a TOP 3 finish in the League and progress in the Cups. After the long Christmas break we hosted Armagh Hockey Club in our first ISC match of the season. A highly competent performance saw railway beat a young capable Armagh side 6-2. Unfortunately an away trip to Ballymoney in the Quarter Final saw our exit in the cup, nevertheless a good warm up for the AIL match against them on the 20th of May. Railway reached the Leinster cup Final for only the 2nd time in the clubs history. A below par performance saw us loose 2-1 to an extremely motivated UCD side. The support received from the club was phenomenal, each and every player appreciated the efforts people went to, hopefully 2007 can see us lift the Cup!In second half of the league campaign we Played 9, Won 6, Drew 2, and Lost 1. In early March we were still in contention to win the league. Our final league placing was 3rd which has gained us qualification to our second successive All Ireland Finals appearance. Only loosing 2 games in the league all season an impressive statistic! During the season Railway formed an indoor team and we were invited to Birmgham to play in the Midlands Invitational Tournament. Having never played indoor before it was a good opportunity to learn on the job so to speak. Railway were unlucky with some close results that went against us. The opposition were some of the best in the UK and we convincingly defeated the reigning Welsh Champions who will be playing in Europe next year. Our sincere thanks to Jonty who coached us and even managed to play with the worst port hangover ever!

Coaching staff & Management.
Una McCarthy embarked on her third year as Railway Coach, building on the success of the pervious 2 years she couldn’t stop what she had started! Denise McCarthy also returned, for her second year. To have both Una and Denise continue benefited the team immensely having learnt so much the previous 2 year this allowed the team to further develop the playing style. Alan McKibban, aka “Hubba”, continued his expert goal keeper coaching.Chris and Tristan continued on as a “double act” from the previous year. Working tirelessly behind the scenes often doing thankless jobs that make all the difference. Tristan of course having recently returned from China where he videoed the Irish Men in the World Cup Qualifiers……all those spy mission on wet weekends were worth it!!! Sinead Callanan the gluten for punishment continued on for the 3rd year as our physio preventing and managing the team’s injuries and offering great chat on the physio table.  The Ladies 1st Team success over the past 2 years has only been made possible through the dedication that the coach’s and management have displayed. Railway are fortunate to have a  panel of extremely talented players but without the direction, coaching, tactics, injury prevention/curing, videoing, bunting/banner hanging, shouts of encouragement/frustration, spare skirt supplying……..we would never have achieved as much as we have.  On a personal note I’d like to thank Karen Clarke who has been a brilliant Vice Captain. She has always been there to do anything and everything, nothing is too much hassle. I’d also like to thank all the players, this year has been a breeze to be captain! Everyone at some point or another has taken on responsibility to undertake a task, you have no idea how much of a difference that makes.

Thanks to:The Eagle House, DPA, Careers Register for their sponsorshipThe Ladies Committee, for your support both on and off the Field. Ali Coyne and Bruce Thompson for assistance with Fixtures. Zoe Coughlan for registration.Caroline Brophy for Railway Lines and the Website. Supporters – You are ACES!!!  See you at the AIL’ on the 19th, 20th & 21st May!!! Jane Coyne and all helpers who organised the Goal Keepers Kamp! And anyone else who I have forgotten.

Ros Lynch 1st XI Captain
